The growing of food and care-taking the sources of food have traditionally been
the center of work and joy in all cultures. Food and the labor that produces it
are intrinsically woven together and synergistic.
Labor is not a commodity, but an expression of dignity.
Labor is the essence of trade. It is a precious and valuable gift we give, not
only for self-sustenance, but to contribute to a greater good. Our work defines
who we are as much as the food we eat gives us the strength to collaborate and
build community.
Food is a necessity of survival for all people, and like
labor, is a powerful force in our lives that we regard with respect. While food
and labor are huge factors in any economic equation, both food and labor
transcend monetary definitions into the realm of pleasure, joy and
satisfaction.
The choice of what we eat affects our health and the world
around us. To honor our own work in the world is a powerful choice, as well.
Food for People, Not for Profit was the unifying
principle, and byline, for the community based food distribution network of
which VV was a part during the 1970’s.
Our motivation was control of the food supply for the common good, not
profit seeking.
It may be an outdated slogan, but today the
words are still relevant to our business. Our goal is sustainability for our
farmers, our customers and ourselves; to be sustainable we must be economically
viable. Operating with the greater community in mind, offering fair prices when
buying, selling and hauling, while providing good wages, benefits and equipment
for ourselves, has enabled us to thrive.
